Melbourne (2a)

Saturday morning in Melbourne, newspapers over breakfast on the 28th floor, looking out at the view.  Not a bad way to start the day.  We headed out to the Sky Deck at the Eureka Tower, sixty floors higher than our breakfast location.  It takes 38 seconds to go up 88 floors, with your ears popping the whole way.  However the view from the top spectacular.  You can feel the building move - apparently it can flex up to 6cm each way, which feels a bit odd.

Back down on solid ground we found our way to the right tram and went out to Melbourne Zoo.  A baby meerkat (very cute), the biggest elephant I have ever seen (and they crossed the path in front of us) as well as two babies and an orangutan hiding under a sheet.  But the highlight was the butterfly house.  Free flying butterflies everywhere, with their colours shining.  It was beautiful.

Back on the tram, we went back into town for our slot at the Melbourne Museum for the Tutankhamun exhibition.  It was amazing and the children were enthralled.  I had thought Steph might not get into it, but she did.  I remember being in the British Museum years ago and seeing the Rosetta Stone.  The reality of history came home with a thump.  This experience was similar - we were looking at things that were 3000 years old that people had created and used and loved.  Tutankhamun had games in his tomb, and a chair that he used to sit in when he was a child.

It was with minds slightly reeling that we escaped the gift shop and went out into the evening air for our personal Egyptian tribute moment.
